Before a career in hotels, our next memory maker started out in engineering on a North Sea oil rig, when the 1998 oil crisis took him on a trip to Australia before landing on the banks of Loch Tay working for a Scottish hotel resort. Having traveled the world for long periods at a time – the Covid pandemic challenged his work-life balance.

Steve Dow takes us on a journey through his travels in adult life while holding down a young family, in his own words;

“Every minute of every day I do it for my kids”.

From meeting Orangutans in Borneo, climbing 5545m to a peak across from Mount Everest to “chewing the fat with Mike Tyson” in Las Vegas – memories he knows he could never recreate.

Proud of his native Scotland as he plans his retirement place in the countryside within nature, for Steve the best advice he received was from Tyson himself – “Never ever ever give up, never give in.”

Listen in as he shares his regrets and why he now has a new perspective on life.

Our Memory Makers choose three photographs and a treasured souvenir of places or people from their travels. The four represent moments of particular importance to them, whether personally or professionally. They take us on a journey, reflecting on the significance of a specific moment in time, the sentiment of the period, and what was going on in the world around us.
